Tools Used To Create This Site

Intro
As you read in The History of Ryan's Website (you did read it, right?) I've used many different programs over the years I have fiddled with creating web content. I (as I presume most other people like me) find a program I like to use quite often. This is generally good. New tools, features, or site management (everybody with more than three links needs this) capabilities lure people to switch. Switching programs is generally not fun. It can be very hard unless you just start from scratch again. The tool set I currently use I'm very happy with. And so I list them here with links to their respective publishers. Give credit where credits due and especially when you find a company doing the right things.

Site Creation

I am currently using Dreamweaver for site creation. It's published by Macromedia. A great tool in many ways...where do I start? The actual page creation can be done through the actual WYSIWYG editor, the HTML window, or an external editor of your choice.

Magnificent. What's left to say? The WYSIWYG window is simple to use, and great for doing tables or lots of text. You can adjust the program settings to use whatever kind of tags you would like (Ex: <UPPERCASE> or <lowercase>, HTML 4.0 or 3.0 standards, convert tables to layers, etc.). It also supports Style Sheets and DHTML, plus the normal goodies like Java, JavaScript, Shockwave, ActiveX Controls, blah, blah. It does it all. You can import a page or a site. You can choose a "root" directory where all your files will be stored. This allows you to manage multiple site easily. Library items for each site allow repeated images and image maps to be plopped anywhere and anytime without a bunch of extra work. The FTP program included is fully functional and easy to use with the site management tools. Of course, you can set programs you would like to preview your pages in and assigning keys to them for quick access. You can have as many of these programs as you would like and add and subtract them without going through a bunch of setup garbage for Dreamweaver.

This is what is known as the proverbial "tip of the iceberg" and we aren't talking about lettuce. This program is a ll meat and potatoes. I can only summarize some of the options with the external editor and the the HTML source window because I do not use an external HTML editor (Dreamweaver comes with a full copy of HomeSite by Allaire) and only occasionally script HTML myself anymore. Dreamweaver NEVER dares to touch the code you typed, anything brought in from an external editor or even pasted from the clipboard. It is as it is. (WOW, that is five two-letter words in a row! -- backwards it says: Sit isas iti. Oh well.) SO, when I'm using the WYSIWYG editor I can watch/change/fix any code by looking slightly to the right at the HTML Source window. VERY helpful feature. Microsoft: take notes! Since Dreamweaver sticks religiously to standard code you need not worry about cross-browser compatibility. You can, however, put browser specific code in yourself.

That is a quick overview of the features in Dreamweaver 1.2 BUT an new version is out. You can discover all the new great features plus the multitudes I did not cover by downloading the evaluation version of Dreamweaver 2.0 (to the best of my knowledge it is fully functional -- for a little while anyway) and using it yourself.

Graphics
Adobe Photoshop...what else is there? Oh, and PaintShop Pro. And also ThumbsPlus. I think that is it. Of course I use Photoshop to get my images ready for the web. Primarily just photos. I have Action sequences that process the images automatically. It's a great tool. PaintShop Pro is what I use to make graphics used on the website like menus and buttons. Also, for graphic management I use ThumbsPlus. I don't know what else I can say about each of these software applications except go get 'em.

FTP/Other
Hmmm...I've used a whole lot of FTP utilities and I've finally found one that I like. You won't see a link to CuteFTP or BulletProof FTP or any other utilities like them because they suck. Go get AbsoluteFTP. Now. Go. Hurry.
